Size of Peanut: Avocado. Nom nom. Someone pass the guacamole, preferably from Chipotle.
Total Weight Gain: I'll have an update next week after my doctor's appointment this Friday. I'm sure stepping on the scale will be an exhilarating experience.
Maternity Clothes: Okay listen. Why can't anyone make some cheap maternity workout capris? I want to spend like $15 on something that's not going to dig into my stomach and make me feel terrible during my entire workout. I also would prefer to NOT stretch out my precious and obnoxiously expensive Lululemon capris, because at $90 a pop they need to last me for approximately 10 years (I'm not even remotely kidding about that time frame). You all, Old Navy and Gap don't even HAVE capri leggings in a maternity style. The ones from Motherhood Maternity are $40. Is this a joke? Can a pregnant lady catch a break around here?
Sleep: I've been doing a lot of mattress research this week. I have discovered these beds in a box that are basically foam layer mattresses that come in a box to your house. You cut the box open and within 30 minutes the foam has expanded into a full mattress. There are several different companies that make them, so right now I'm trying to narrow it down to one that makes the most sense for our needs. I am SO intrigued and the reviews all over the internet are pretty good. They are relatively affordable, ship for free, and they have great return policies. Seriously, I can't wait to sell our house and get rid of this terrible bed. I confirmed with Jake this week that he in fact hates our mattress as much as I do and I am not just being a princess about it. He wakes up with a sore neck almost every day. Between that and my back problems, it's time to spend some money on a mattress that hopefully holds up longer than 4 months (because that's about how long the one we are currently sleeping on held up before it started SUCKING).
Best Moment(s) this week: We went to Lexington this past weekend to hang out with our college friends. Not only was it fantastic to just hang out with nothing to do (i.e. weddings, showers, etc.), but Sam had a great time. On Sunday we took her to Keeneland. Anyone with a toddler knows that an outing like this can go one of two ways: totally flipping terrible or really flipping great. Luckily for us, she was a rock star all day and seemingly loved every second. She got to get her picture with Buckles, cheered for the horses during each race, got a huge thing of popcorn that she wasn't too keen (pun intended) on sharing, and even picked a horse for Jake to bet on that ended up winning. $11 in her piggy bank for her first trip to Keeneland - not bad! Now this momma needs a Keeneland fix next fall when I can tailgate with some Prosecco and no children.
Gender: Jake has won this battle - we are going to find out. I just wasn't strong enough to care to wait a full 9 months. He also made the point that we have a lot of other unknowns in our life right now, and he would just like to know what to prepare for. I can't really argue with him, and if it makes him feel closer and more in tune with this little one growing in my belly, then I might as well appease him.
Movement: Well, we totally cheated and got an ultrasound this past week. Jake's stepmom works at an OBGYN office. We were able to go visit her at work last week with Sam and get a little sneak peak at the peanut in my belly. I am happy to report that based on what they saw, everything looked good. This little guy or gal was moving and grooving all over the place in there, which confirms that these gas-like feelings I've been having are most likely little arms and legs kicking all over the place.
Speaking of movement, one of my favorite humans that I don't even know (check out Glennon Doyle Melton over at Momastery if you want to recharge your soul today) shared a video spreading the word about stillbirth and moms in Iowa who have started a campaign called Count the Kicks. I had no idea about any of this, so I'm glad Glennon and her army of warriors are spreading the word. All the pregnant ladies out there can check out the website here.
Food Cravings: I have quite the story for this week. Monday morning I woke up with a terrible stomach ache. We're talking multiple trips to the bathroom before I even left for work (TMI? sorry). Of course there was a lunch time chili cook-off at work. I avoided the spicy stuff and went for a small helping of white chicken chili. About 2 hours later I was obviously starving. I decided that I wanted french fries, particularly french fries covered with cheese. Lucky for me, there is a Skyline right across the street from my office. My friend kindly offered to walk over with me to indulge my fatness. Wouldn't you know that Skyline, of ALL PLACES, was CLOSED on Columbus Day. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? All I wanted was some damn cheese fries and they ruined my day by being closed for the dumbest holiday of the year. How rude.
Symptoms: Nothing new to report this week. Occasional headaches, no sleep, back pain, huge boobs, tired, moody, short on breath, pain in my lower abdomen when I sneeze or laugh too hard. It's all really fun and exciting. Anyone who has never been pregnant before should really look forward to all of these awesome things that come along with growing a human.
What I Miss: Take the list of all of my complaints above...I miss not experiencing all of those things on the reg.
What I am Looking Forward to: Uneventful doctor's appointments are the best doctor's appointments and I look forward to them. I actually pray for an uneventful appointment before each appointment. I go for a 16 week check up on Friday, and I am looking forward to hopefully another good report.
General Tidbits:
-I think I'm going to start stockpiling diapers for this babe. We didn't really do that with Sam because we had so many showers and help from so many awesome people in our lives that we didn't have to buy diapers for about 5 months after she was born. I am fairly confident that people don't care as much about the second baby (truth hurts people) and I don't blame them, so I think we should start buying diapers so we can have one less expense when this peanut gets here.
-When I was pregnant with Sam, I remember reading a book where the author suggested that since she wore supportive bras during the day and a nighttime bra every night, her breasts didn't change after the birth of her kids. Now that I've been through this one time, I have to call her on that bullshit. I guess it's possible she had essentially no breasts to speak of before she got pregnant. But you can't sit here and tell me that she went from having relatively large breasts before having kids, to having triple X porn stars breasts during pregnancy and breastfeeding, to having the same relatively large and perky breasts after her kids were born. All that stretching and deflating is a recipe for saggy, terrible, post baby breasts. I can't even imagine how awful mine will be after this time around. I'm almost halfway through and they still hurt, and are still growing.
Sam Tidbits:
-If you would like to know how to have your heart melt into a large puddle of goo in the middle of your chest, I have some advice for you. Go to work all day. Eat dinner with your toddler. Leave your house and go to a meeting and return when said toddler is getting in bed. Ask if you can have a hug. Watch your toddler throw her arms around you as quickly as she can and hear her say "Mommy, I'm so glad you're home." Try not to cry huge crocodile tears as you hug her back while realizing that in 10 short hours you're going to be leaving her for another long work day.
-Why is Sam waking up before 7am every day? And it's not consistent. One day it's 6:40, the next day it's 5am. I might as well chuck that green light alarm clock out the window. I do not appreciate it. Please go back to sleep, child.
Callie update:
I generally do not have a good feeling about her well being right now. She seems to be lazier than normal, and she kind of mopes around like she's really sad. I hope I'm wrong, stay tuned.
Oh, and one more thing since it's Thursday - GO CATS! BEAT AUBURN!
